Kalasha: A Jacquard Design Project

The brief of this project was to study a traditional woven motif and contemporarise it in our own way and create designs for surfaces for an upholstery collection which would then be worked on using Jacquard software to be sent for weaving.
kalasha, also spelled kalash or kalasa, also called ghat or ghot, is a metal (brass, copper, silver or gold) pot with a large base and small mouth, large enough to hold a coconut.
Sometimes kalasha also refers to such a pot filled with water and topped with a coronet of mango leaves and a coconut. This combination is often used in Hindu rites and depicted in Hindu and Jain iconography and in traditional woven textiles.

RESEARCH/MOTIF DEVELOPMENT
Many traditional woven pieces from different parts of India were observed to see the existing versions of the kalasha motif.

Development of motif explorations in black and white.

SURFACE EXPLORATIONS
Putting the motifs in repeat- first two in horizontal half step repeat and the next one in straight repeat.

Other explorations in color.

I would like to thank Vijai Singh Katiyar for guiding us through this course and Anil Patel for teaching the basics of the software. Feedback is appreciated.
